The Mabinogion is a collection of prose stories from medieval Welsh literature. Compiled in the 12th to 13th centuries, these tales originate from earlier oral traditions. The stories of the Mabinogion are deeply rooted in Celtic mythology and culture.
“The Dream of Maxen Wledig” is a Welsh tale from The Mabinogion.
The Roman emperor Maxen dreams of a beautiful maiden who lives in a distant castle. Determined to find her, he travels until he discovers Elen of Caernarfon, whom he marries. As part of their union, he grants her father sovereignty over Britain, weaving together elements of historical legend and romantic folklore.
Elen is also known as the “Goddess of the Ways.”
In modern pagan and mythological interpretations, she is depicted as an ancient goddess, shown with antlers, associated with supreme power and the energetic pathways, or ley lines, that run through the Welsh landscape.
